Cipro and Levaquin Lawsuits — When Antibiotics Do More Harm Than Good
Antibiotic medications like Cipro (ciprofloxacin) and Levaquin (levofloxacin) are under fire for causing severe side effects and secondary health problems. These drugs are both fluoroquinolones, a class of strong antibiotics used to treat bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, gastrointestinal tract, skin, and other systems. Cipro and Levaquin are often prescribed to patients with pneumonia or bronchitis.
Some of the adverse side effects individuals who have taken fluoroquinolones have reported are:
- Aortic aneurysm
- Aortic dissection
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS)
- Tendon issues and ruptures
- Muscle pain and/or weakness
- Digestive problems, diarrhea
- Central nervous system disorders
- Allergic reactions/skin reactions
In May 2016, an FDA safety review indicated that systematically-used fluoroquinolones are associated with disabling and potentially permanent serious side effects.
The statement also advised that the side effects associated with fluoroquinolone antibacterial drugs generally outweigh the benefits for patients with acute sinusitis, acute bronchitis, and uncomplicated urinary tract infections — essentially any case where other treatment options exist.
New labels and warnings have been included on boxes as of July 2016, but for many patients, it was too late. The manufacturers of Cipro and Levaquin are facing thousands of lawsuits.
