Approved by the FDA in October, 2010, Pradaxa is an anti-coagulant (blood thinner) used to prevent incidences of heart attack or stroke in atrial fibrillation patients. Its use has spread like wild-fire. After its endorsement by both the American College of Cardiology Foundation and The American Heart Association in February 2011, it was prescribed for millions of patients around the globe. The Pradaxa name became ubiquitous.

However, the drug’s manufacturer, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals Inc., confirmed reports in November 2011 that 260 Pradaxa patients worldwide had died from fatal internal bleeding. Numerous cases of severe internal bleeding/hemorrhaging began to surface, which led the FDA to launch an investigation into Pradaxa side-effects and the manufacturer’s potential liability.

Boehringer Ingelheim may not have adequately alerted consumers to the possible dangerous side-effects of Pradaxa. Although the drug label does warn of significant or fatal bleeds, it does not caution users that these hemorrhages cannot be treated or reversed.

Other anti-coagulant drugs, such as Warfarin, also harbor internal bleeding risks, but these bleeds can usually be mitigated or completely reversed by fresh frozen plasma and Vitamin K treatments. There are currently no such known treatments for Pradaxa bleeds.

There have been reports of Pradaxa’s risk since its conception. In its first few weeks on the market, MedWatch, the reporting arm of the FDA, linked Pradaxa to more detrimental events than over 89.7% of other drugs. After 5 months, there were hundreds of reported cases of injury and death as the result of massive internal bleeding.
