Pradaxa® is a relatively new prescription drug diagnosed to reduce stroke risks and prevent blood clots for patients with atrial fibrillation, a heart rhythm disorder. The drug has been on the market since October 2010 but Pradaxa side effects have reportedly been the cause of many deaths in the past two years from increased risks of heart attacks and internal bleeding in the kidneys, intestines and brain.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a statement in December 2011 announcing an investigation of claims that bleeding injuries and Pradaxa side effects have led to dozens of disabilities, injuries or deaths in the last two years.
Pradaxa is a new type of prescription drug that works as an anticoagulant (delays blood clotting) by obstructing the enzyme passage that can cause blood clots. Pradaxa was preferred to Warfarin, another type of anticoagulation drug, because of the reduced need to monitor patients. But while Warfarin side effects can be reversed through the treatment of vitamin K, there is no reversal treatment for patients who have suffered bleeding injuries from Pradaxa side effects.
Because of the nature of anticoagulant medication, bleeding injuries are a potential risk for patients taking Pradaxa, Warfarin or other similar prescription drugs. But the number of deaths and side effects has led to an FDA investigation to determine whether more side effects and deaths have occurred with Pradaxa in comparison to other similar drugs.
Symptoms of hemorrhaging kidneys or gastrointestinal organs can include abnormal bleeding from the gums or nose, heavy (possibly uncontrollable) menstrual or vaginal bleeding, pink or brown urine, red or black stools, strange appearances of bruises, coughing up blood or vomiting blood.
According to the claim, Pradaxa did not adequately warn its consumers of the serious side effects, resulting in the potential liability of the company for the suffered injuries and deaths.
