Janet Ward Black was a guest speaker at the 2013 North Carolina Girls State held at Catawba College in Salisbury on June 12. Black has been a speaker every year for over 20 years except for one year when she was out of the country on a mission trip. She feels strongly about supporting young women who are at the threshold of their post-high school studies and plans her schedule around her participation in the event.
Several hundred high school juniors, who are in the top third of their classes academically, are selected by their schools to participate in this workshop held annually for the last 74 years by the American Legion Auxiliary of North Carolina. The function of the Girls State event is to teach the young women via a hands-on approach how local and state governments operate. Many of the Girls State participants are active in their school governments already and go on to become leaders in their communities.
