Vaccine Injury: Diagnosis of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS)
Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) affects the peripheral nervous system, leading to muscle weakness and sometimes even paralysis. The condition causes the body’s immune system to attack healthy nerve cells. For this reason, it is categorized as an autoimmune disease. With GBS, the level of severity can range from person to person. Some maintain mobility and independence while others require the assistance of a ventilator to breathe. GBS occurs primarily in people over 50 years of age, however, both children and adults have developed the condition after receiving a flu shot. Although your chances of developing GBS after a vaccination are low, it does happen. Ward Black Law has represented numerous clients facing this challenging condition.
What Causes GBS?
Although it is unknown why some people develop GBS and others do not, a few possible links have been found. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the condition may occur after a person suffers from symptoms of a viral infection, whether respiratory or gastrointestinal. Surgery can also trigger GBS, and in some cases, vaccinations (such as the flu shot) may increase a person’s risk of developing the condition. For those who develop GBS after getting a vaccination, symptoms can arise within the days or weeks after the vaccine is administered.
According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms usually begin in the feet and legs before spreading to the patient’s upper body.
Signs and symptoms may include:
- Pins and needles sensations in your fingers, toes, ankles, or wrists
- Weakness in your legs that spreads to your upper body
- Unsteady walking or inability to climb stairs
- Severe pain that may feel achy or cramp-like
- Difficulty with bladder control or bowel function
- Rapid heart rate
- Low or high blood pressure
- Difficulty breathing
- Difficulty with eye/facial movements (speaking, chewing, or swallowing)
