Infections After Surgery with the Stockert 3T Heater-Cooler System

Bookmark and Share

The Stockert 3T Heater-Cooler system is a device used during surgery to regulate the patient’s body temperature. It has been associated with an increased risk of infection from the mycobacterium chimaera, a microorganism which can be deadly.

About the Stockert 3T heater-cooler system
Most commonly used during invasive, open-chest procedures, the Stockert 3T heater-cooler  system is comprised of water tanks and circuits that keep patients warm while maintaining cardioplegia (the necessary halting of cardiac activity) during surgeries.

The device is used primarily in open-heart surgeries, but also for surgeries involving the esophagus, lungs, and other chest organs. It is used in more than half of all heart surgeries.

The Problem
Dangerous bacteria can grow inside the system’s tanks, contaminating the water and emitting a vapor that then spreads throughout the operating room. This creates an unsterile environment for open-chest surgeries.

Some patients have developed infections post-surgery, resulting in pain, suffering, additional medical bills, and in rare cases, even death. Infection from mycobacterium chimaera is particularly dangerous for patients with compromised immune systems. The FDA has issued a formal warning.

Mycobacterium Chimaera Infections
Patients who come into contact with mycobacterium chimaera while undergoing surgery may not develop symptoms right away. It can take months or even years for an infection to surface. The survival rate is 50 percent, making it vital to seek prompt medical attention.

Signs of a mycobacterium chimaera infection may include:

  • Fever
  • Breathing trouble
  • Fatigue or sudden energy loss
  • Pain in muscles and/or joints
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • A cough that won’t go away
  • Inflammation or draining around the surgical site

According to the CDC, more than half a million heart surgery patients are currently at risk for developing an infection.
