Ameridose LLC of Massachusetts, sister company of the Framingham New England Compounding Center linked to the recent nationwide outbreak of fungal meningitis, has recalled all of its unexpired products in circulation. Meningitis, potentially fatal, causes inflammation of the lining that surrounds the spinal cord and brain.

The New England Compounding Center’s injectable steroidal drugs, contaminated with the fungus Exserohilum rostratum, were administered to approximately 14,000 patients for back pain. The contaminated drugs were blamed for sickening 461 people and causing 32 deaths from a rare fungal meningitis or joint infection. According to Dr. Beth Bell of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, many of the stricken patients are also experiencing ongoing complications, including inflammation of the nerves’ membrane linings and abscesses at the original injection sites near the spine or joints.

Ameridose, a large-scale drug compounder, supplied drugs to thousands of hospitals across the country. It provided more than 2,200 blended drugs for things such as inducing labor, tranquilizing children before surgery, treating severe asthma attacks and anesthetizing patients for outpatient surgery. It issued a voluntary recall as the outbreak spread “out of an abundance of caution,” as they write on their website:

The Ameridose recall came after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration began investigating the facility last October and released preliminary findings citing “a lack of sterility assurance for products produced at and distributed by this facility.” The FDA investigators found dirt and pathogens, leaky ceilings, insects, unsterile conditions and at least one bird flying around the facility. Their report also addressed a number of complaints about the ineffectiveness of Ameridose drugs.
