What is Byetta®, and What is it Prescribed for?

Byetta®, manufactured by Amylin Pharmaceuticals, is an injectable prescription medication used to help improve blood sugar control in adults with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. When used in combination with a consistent diet and exercise program, Byetta® is designed to improve glucose levels by encouraging the production of a hormone called glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1).

Byetta® Side Effects

In general, side effects of Byetta® usage include nausea, vomiting, weight loss, heartburn, dizziness and headache. However, in the past few years, the FDA has investigated a possible link between Byetta® usage and liver failure, pancreatic cancer and/or thyroid cancer.

– Byetta® and Kidney Failure

From April 2005 to October 2008, the FDA has reported 78 cases of altered kidney function in patients using Byetta®, including 62 cases of acute renal failure and 16 cases of renal insufficiency. In 2009, the FDA began requiring Amylin to add the risk of kidney damage and renal failure to Byetta’s® warning labels.

– Byetta®, Pancreatitis and Pancreatic Cancer

In a 2011 study conducted by the Larry L. Hillblom Islet Research Center, Byetta® usage was linked to a higher risk of developing acute pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. A potentially life-threatening inflammation of the pancreas, symptoms of pancreatitis include severe abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. Severe cases of pancreatitis can lead to hospitalization and even death – with a mortality rate ranging between 10 and 30 percent. The number one cause of cancer death, pancreatic cancer spreads rapidly and is rarely detected in its earliest stages. Fatal cases of pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer and Byetta® usage were publicized in a recent Bloomberg report.

– Byetta® and Thyroid Cancer

According to this same study, which was later published in the Gastroenterology medical journal, researchers also found a  link between Byetta® usage and a greater risk of developing thyroid cancer. While thyroid cancer is not common in the United States, it can be life-threatening. Symptoms of thyroid cancer include swollen lymph nodes or lumps that can be felt through the skin in neck, voice changes, difficulty swallowing and pain of the neck and throat.
