Lemtrada Warning for Strokes and Arterial Dissections: What MS Patients Need to Know

Bookmark and Share

The multiple sclerosis (MS) drug Lemtrad® has been linked to serious side effects including ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, and head or neck (cervicocephalic) arterial dissection. These side effects can cause permanent disability or death. If you or a loved one suffered harm after taking Lemtrada, the attorneys at Ward Black Law in Greensboro, NC, can help.

What is Lemtrada and Why is it Prescribed?

Lemtrada is the brand name of a drug called alemtuzumab, which is used to treat relapsing MS, an autoimmune disease. It is manufactured by Genzyme which is a subsidiary of the multinational pharmaceutical company Sanofi.

Patients with MS who are treated with Lemtrada receive an intravenous infusion (drip) of the medication over a four-hour period. The drug is thought to target and remove overactive immune cells that often attack healthy parts of the nervous system during an MS relapse.

Side Effects

Some common side effects of Lemtrada include headache, rash, fever, nausea, fatigue, as well as upper respiratory infections and urinary tract infections. However, patients who suffer from serious reactions, such as ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, or head or neck (cervicocephalic) arterial dissection, may have a different set of side effects. These include:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness that usually affects one side of the body
  • Confusion, trouble speaking, or understanding speech
  • Vision issues
  • Dizziness, trouble walking, or loss of balance
  • Sudden severe headache or neck pain
  • These adverse events occur within three days of Lemtrada administration.

Lemtrada’s Black Box Warning

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a Drug Safety Communication warning for patients, stating that Lemtrada administration carries the risk of strokes and tears in the lining of arteries. Labeling changes were mandated in November 2018, including a boxed warning, the most prominent and serious type of FDA warning.
