Janet Ward Black named one of Top 50 Women Lawyers in NC
Janet Ward Black has been selected by her peers for inclusion in the 2013 edition of North Carolina Super Lawyers, a Thomson Reuters Service. She was selected for recognition in the specialty area of Personal Injury Litigation and as one of the “Top 50 Women Attorneys” in North Carolina. This is Black’s ninth consecutive year being named in the publication.
Selection to North Carolina Super Lawyers is based first on input from lawyers across the state. Each candidate is evaluated for twelve indicators of “peer recognition and professional achievement,” such as experience, awards and recognitions and their client list. Finally, a panel of respected and experienced legal peers evaluates the candidates within their own area of expertise. This process narrows the list to the top 5 percent of the state’s attorneys.
Janet Ward Black is a past president of the North Carolina Bar Association. In addition to serving as president of the NCBA, Black has also served as the President of the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers. She was the second attorney in history to serve as president of both organizations.
Recently Black was presented the Women of Justice Award 2013 in the Litigation Practitioner category presented by North Carolina Lawyers Weekly. She has been named in “Best Lawyers in America” and in Business North Carolina’s “Legal Elite.” In 2011, 2012 and 2013 her firm was named as one of the “Best Law Firms” by US News & World Report. She won the NC State Bar’s Distinguished Service Award in 2010 and Duke Law School’s Distinguished Alumni for Public Service in 2010. While president of the NCBA, Black’s signature initiative was creation of the “4ALL” program, which included a day-long event allowing North Carolina residents the opportunity to call and speak to a lawyer at no charge. The program is now in its sixth year and has been replicated in other states and Canada. The next 4ALL Day is March 1, 2013. Anyone in North Carolina can call a talk to a lawyer anonymously and at no charge on that day. The toll free number to call is 800-638-2869.
