Ward Black Law Awarded Sponsor of the Year by the Queen’s Foundation

On September 13, 2011, the Queen’s Foundation Powerhouse Scholarship program recognized Ward Black Law as the Sponsor of the Year for its support and investment in time, donations and resources to the Queen’s Foundation and the Powerhouse Project for 2011.  Ronda Holloway, WBL's firm administrator, accepted the award on behalf of Janet Ward Black.  The reception was held at the Embassy Suites in Greensboro, where several individuals and firms were acknowledged for their contributions to the project.

The Queen’s Foundation, begun by Miss North Carolina 2010, Nadia Moffett, is a non-profit dedicated to encourage and celebrate the accomplishments and growth of young women in the educational and professional world.  The Powerhouse Project targets high school girls and selects a group each summer to participate in a six-week intern program designed to challenge and shape the young ladies into role models and leaders in their schools and personal lives.  Each of the 13 participants this year were assigned mentors in the professional field where they were coached and schooled in a real work environment where they learned real life work experience.

Attorneys Camille Payton of Ward Black Law and Afi Johnson-Parris of Johnson-Parris Law, a family law attorney, who has an office in the Ward Black Law building, were mentors for two young ladies from Southeast High School in High Point.  The two were coached one-on-one, attended court and mediations with the attorneys, and worked with employees within the law firm as well as attended seminars and workshops conducted by the Powerhouse Project itself.  Each of the two young ladies, as well as the other eleven students, was awarded with a $500 academic scholarship for their acceptance and participation in the program.

“It was a rewarding experience to work with the young ladies from the Powerhouse Project,” said Attorney Payton.  “They are highly motivated and intelligent women and will be assets to the colleges and employers that they will be involved with in the future.  We look forward to continuing our association with Nadia Moffett and the Queen’s Foundation.”
