Stolen Human Tissue in NC
Some patients from Moses Cone Hospital, Duke University Medical Center, Rowan Regional Medical Center, NorthEast Medical Center, Carolinas Medical Center, CMC-Mercy, Catawba Valley Medical Center and other North Carolina hospitals have been notified that they may have received tissue implants that were not properly screened. The FDA (United States Food and Drug Administration) has learned that some of the tissue may have come from body parts stolen from a funeral home in New York. The illegal tissue was provided to processors for use in surgeries, including dental, back, neck and other surgeries. This tissue may not have been screened for serious diseases -- such as hepatitis and HIV -- as it should have been, before it got to your hospital.
Human tissue recovered by Biomedical Tissue Services, Ltd. may have been removed from corpses without the consent of the decedents’ families. Biomedical Tissue Services is being investigated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the district attorney’s office in New York. To read more, click here.
