Salmonella Poisoning from Peanut Butter

NEW WARNING:  On January 12, 2009, Federal and state health officials said that salmonella linked earlier in Minnesota to King Nut peanut butter was caused by the same strain of bacteria responsible for an ongoing outbreak of 410 salmonella cases in 43 states.  At this time there are no lot numbers available, but it is known that the lots affected were sold only to institutions such as schools, hospitals and long-term-care facilities.  King Nut is the only brand of peanut butter used in the stricken institutions.  The CDC on Monday raised the number of confirmed cases to 410, from 399 as of Friday, and Mississippi became the 43rd state to report a case. All the illnesses began between Sept. 15 and Jan. 7, but most of the people became sick after Oct. 1.

On February 14, 2007 the FDA warned consumers not to eat peanut butter sold under the brand names Peter Pan and Great Value (Wal-Mart brand) due to possible salmonella contamination. The lot numbers involved begin with 21111 and were manufactured in Georgia by ConAgra.

Symptoms of salmonella poisoning include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramping.

Our firm is investigating cases where medical treatment was needed and salmonella poisoning was diagnosed. Salmonella poisoning is confirmed through a stool culture.
