  • The North Carolina Bar Association was selected as the 2009 recipient of the “Harrison Tweed Award” and the 2009 “Excellence in Public Service Award” by the American Bar Association. These awards recognize the “4ALL” program, which was created during Attorney Janet Ward Black’s presidency of the NCBA, to promote free legal services to the poor. This program was the centerpiece of her presidency in 2007-2008 and remains a central focus of the NCBA.

  • Attorney S. Camille Payton of Ward Black Law in Greensboro with Tracey Jones of Teague, Campbell, Dennis and Gorham of Raleigh is the editor for the second edition of the North Carolina Workers’ Compensation Manual. The two attorneys volunteered their time in order to get the updated manual to press for which the members of the CLE department are grateful.

For the past 10 years, the Journal has selected a few extraordinary businesswomen to honor in their publication as inspirations to local businesses and their owners.
  • NC Bar Association Selected as Winner of the 2009 Harrison Tweed Award

  • The North Carolina Bar Association has been selected as a 2009 recipient of the Harrison Tweed Award by the American Bar Association for its promotion of free legal services to the poor through the establishment of the 4ALL program, which was created during Janet Ward Black’s presidency of the NCBA. Since the formation of this program in 2007, several other bar associations across the country have adopted the 4ALL concept in their own states. Each year since 1956, the American Bar Association Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defendants (SCLAID) and the National Legal Aid and Defender Association (NLADA) select a winner for the recognition. It is awarded to state and local bar associations that have made outstanding efforts to improve the availability of legal services to poor persons in their communities through the development or establishment of projects or programs aimed at increasing access to these services. The presentation of the award will be made at the annual luncheon of the National Conference of Bar Presidents on July 31, 2009 during the ABA Annual Meeting in Chicago. As past president of the North Carolina Bar Association, Janet Ward Black will have the honor of accepting the award for the Association. Congratulations to the North Carolina Bar Association and its members.

  • The Volunteer Center of Greensboro held their annual recognition event on Tuesday, April 27, 2009, at which Janet Ward Black was the keynote speaker and the surprise recipient of an award for her work during her North Carolina Bar Association presidency (2007 – 2008) to provide legal aid to all North Carolinians through the 4ALL program.

  • At the 2nd Annual Women in the Profession Dinner held by the Women’s Law Association of Elon University School of Law, Janet Ward Black was honored for her service to the community and to the profession. Congratulations, Janet Ward!
  • Annual Ask An Attorney Day held March 6, 2009

  • On Friday, March 6, 2009, the North Carolina Bar Association sponsored its second annual Ask a Lawyer Day as a public service to the citizens of North Carolina. On that day, 6700 callers had access to volunteer attorney, paralegals and law students by phone between 7 am and 7 pm. The calls were totally anonymous and covered the entire range of law from divorces to real estate, from traffic law to criminal.

  • The second annual Ask an Attorney Day, sponsored by the North Carolina Bar Association, was an outstanding success.
