NC Bar Association Selected as Winner of the 2009 Harrison Tweed Award
The North Carolina Bar Association has been selected as a 2009 recipient of the Harrison Tweed Award by the American Bar Association for its promotion of free legal services to the poor through the establishment of the 4ALL program, which was created during Janet Ward Black’s presidency of the NCBA. Since the formation of this program in 2007, several other bar associations across the country have adopted the 4ALL concept in their own states.
Each year since 1956, the American Bar Association Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defendants (SCLAID) and the National Legal Aid and Defender Association (NLADA) select a winner for the recognition. It is awarded to state and local bar associations that have made outstanding efforts to improve the availability of legal services to poor persons in their communities through the development or establishment of projects or programs aimed at increasing access to these services.
The presentation of the award will be made at the annual luncheon of the National Conference of Bar Presidents on July 31, 2009 during the ABA Annual Meeting in Chicago. As past president of the North Carolina Bar Association, Janet Ward Black will have the honor of accepting the award for the Association. Congratulations to the North Carolina Bar Association and its members.
