Lexington, North Carolina, once a sparsely populated area, is now home to nearly 20,000 residents, according to the Census 2000 data. Settled by Europeans in 1775, settlers named this community in honor of Lexington, Massachusetts, the first combat site of the American Revolutionary War. Lexington became an incorporated city in 1828.
Lexington, NC sprawls nearly 18 miles across the scenic Piedmont region, in the luscious Yadkin River Valley. Situated near the convergence of Interstate 85 and U.S. Highways 29, 52, 64 and 70, Lexington lies in close proximity to Winston-Salem. Lexington is the seat of Davidson County.
Up until the last decade, furniture manufacturing and textiles were the primary sectors driving Lexington’s prosperous economy. However, competition from abroad resulted in the closure of a significant number of furniture and textile factories. Lexington continues to recover from this and compensates for its losses by working in nearby cities such as Charlotte, Greensboro, High Point, and Winston-Salem. Several businesses that survived the financial crunch consist of family owned facilities that began generations ago. These include Conrad and Hinkle, Davis Chevrolet, Lanier Hardware, Lexington Motor Company and Turlington and Company. Davidson County Community College is the nearest facility for higher learning.
Uptown Lexington remains a dynamic downtown area, which contains Lexington’s only National Register Historic District. Uptown Lexington, NC boasts more than 200 facilities that include community resources, professional, and retail businesses. The district also plays host to community sponsored activities and festivals. Uptown Lexington maintains a ninety-six percent occupancy rate, with retail establishments accounting for only 57 out of the 230 businesses.
While "Lexington" is a common name for towns in the U.S., only Lexington, NC claims the esteemed title of "Barbeque Capital of the World". More than 20 local restaurants offer pork shoulder barbeque cooked over hot wood coals. Lexington, NC is also the host of the annual BBQ Festival, which attracts visitors from all over the U.S. to sample some of the nation’s finest barbeque.
Lexington, North Carolina offers an exciting shopping scene and numerous activities and sites of interest. Bob Timberlake, a realist painter known world wide, has a gallery in his hometown of Lexington that features his artwork, home furnishing accessories, and apparel. NASCAR team owner Richard Childress operates the RCR Museum in Lexington. The site includes shop tours with the team’s awards, trophies and unique memorabilia on display. The Childress Vineyard, also run by Richard Childress, is open to the public in Lexington.
Beautiful High Rock Lake, part of central North Carolina’s Yadkin-Pee Dee chain of lakes, is only 11 miles outside of Lexington. High Rock Lake, Davidson County’s largest lake, with 365 miles of shoreline, affords visitors opportunities for boating, water sports and fishing. High Rock Lake is often the site of the prestigious BASS Masters Classic fishing tournament.
