Janet Ward Black Recognized as an Outstanding Volunteer

The Volunteer Center of Greensboro held their annual recognition event on Tuesday, April 27, 2009, at which Janet Ward Black was the keynote speaker and the surprise recipient of an award for her work during her North Carolina Bar Association presidency (2007 – 2008) to provide legal aid to all North Carolinians through the 4ALL program.

In a statement from Charles Becton, the current president of the bar association, he said this about Janet Ward: “…she continues to serve as a beacon to the legal profession at large and this association in particular.  She has taken a stand on behalf of those who cannot afford legal representation while taking action on behalf of legal aid providers who remain overwhelmed and under funded.”

Janet Ward Black is a strong advocate of volunteerism and sets an example for those around her.  Among her many contributions, she has service as a trustee to Hood Theological Seminary, as a member of the National Advisory Committee of Win-Win Resolutions and as a member of the Advisory Panel of Legal Services of North Carolina.  She has worked as a volunteer for the Appalachian Service Project, Save a Generation – Nicaragua, and Habitat for Humanity – Honduras.  Currently she is very active as a volunteer with International Cooperating Ministries (ICM), an organization very active world wide nurturing believers and building churches.

The Volunteer Center of Greensboro operates as a coordinator of willing volunteer and volunteer-needy organizations.  Through their website or by phone, you can offer up your talents and the staff at the Center will match you with groups that have expressed a need for willing volunteers.  The opportunities vary from one day of work to long term commitments.  There are projects for individuals to large groups.  They also provide listings for people who are obligated to perform community service by order of the court or for a school requirement.  The Volunteer Center can be contacted on the internet at www.volunteergso.org  or by phone at (336) 373-1633.
