Janet Ward Black Named Women of the Profession Honoree for 2009 (04/09/2009)
At the 2nd Annual Women in the Profession Dinner held by the Women’s Law Association of Elon University School of Law, Janet Ward Black was honored for her service to the community and to the profession. Congratulations, Janet Ward!
The WLA chose Janet Ward Black because of her dedication to serving the community through programs such as 4ALL, an initiative of the North Carolina Bar Association for which she was president for the 2007-2008 term. During her term, she was instrumental in the organization and execution of the first annual Ask a Lawyer Day, a day long event during which NC residents can call an attorney via a toll free number and ask any legal question they may have for free. She herself participated in the call-in for that initial day and for the latest Ask a Lawyer Day on March 3, 2009. She actively campaigned for funds for an endowment to make legal representation affordable to the lowest income individuals in North Carolina. Currently, even after the end of her term as president, she continues to be an advocate for the poor through her support of the NC Bar Association activities.
Since the beginning of Elon University School of Law, Janet Ward Black has been a supporter of the school by way of speaking engagements, mentoring and numerous other activities.
The Women’s Law Association of Elon University of Law is a student organization of approximately 85 members. They are a professional group offering supplemental educational, professional and service opportunities to all students at the school. Among its many activities, the group sponsors speakers and networking events designed to broaden the students’ experiences at Elon. Service to the community is a part of this experience. Last year the WLA collected professional clothing for individuals who are in financial difficulty to wear for job interviews and to work. This year’s event was a fundraising race held on March 14 to raise funds and awareness for the Brain Tumor Fund of the Carolinas. The 1st Annual Women in Law Run/Walk was able to raise over $3000 for the charity. Congratulations to the WLA!
